Varicose Veins During Pregnancy: Causes and Prevention Measures

It may be hard to believe, but those ugly, bulging varicose veins are a normal part of a lot of women’s pregnancies. Despite their unattractive appearance, varicose veins are mostly harmless and will probably fade away by the time your child has their first birthday. If you are expecting or planning on getting pregnant, many lifestyle habits can reduce or even prevent the appearance of varicose veins in pregnancy.

What Causes Varicose Veins During Pregnancy?

Varicose veins occur when increased blood pressure within the veins damages the delicate valves that keep the blood flowing in the right direction. The damage causes blood to pool in the vein, causing them to swell, twist, and bulge.

Varicose veins in pregnancy generally form on the legs. When you're pregnant, the weight of the fetus increases pressure on the inferior vena cava (the vein that carries blood from your feet and legs back to your heart), damaging the valves inside. Also, the hormones produced during pregnancy cause the vein walls to become softer, and pregnant women produce more blood than usual. When the pressure causes the vein to bulge out enough, they become visible under the skin, causing varicose veins.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Most women aren't bothered by their varicose veins. However, they can cause pain and discomfort such as throbbing, burning, or cramping sensation in your legs. In most cases, over-the-counter pain medications can relieve these symptoms. Be sure to check with your doctor before taking any medications during pregnancy.

Can You Prevent Varicose Veins?

Here are some steps you can take to reduce the chances that varicose veins will develop.

Exercise

Daily exercise is good for your overall health, not just preventing varicose veins in pregnancy. Focus on exercises that increase the blood circulation in the legs, such as running, walking, biking, stair climbing, and swimming. Be sure to check with your physician before starting an exercise program while you're expecting.

Watch Your Diet

Try and stay within your recommended weight during pregnancy. Eat foods rich in antioxidants, including berries, citrus fruits, whole grains, spinach and other leafy vegetables, asparagus, and avocados. Avoid processed foods, foods high in cholesterol, and foods high in sodium as these can cause your body to retain water.

Avoid Sitting or Standing for Long periods

Sitting or standing for long periods can place pressure on the veins and inhibit the flow of blood. If you've been sitting in one place for more than thirty minutes, get up and move around. Take a seat if you've been standing too long.

Are You Sitting Properly?

How you sit can have a big impact on developing varicose veins in pregnancy. Don't cross your legs or ankles while sitting. When you do sit, make sure your feet are elevated to make it easier for the blood to circulate through your legs.
