Should I Have My Varicose Veins Treated?

There are various reasons one may choose to have their varicose veins treated, but the most common reasons are usually cosmetic or health-related.

If you should decide to seek treatment, you should know that there are many benefits that come with varicose vein treatments:

  • No surgical incision necessary – uses laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery techniques
  • When compared with traditional vein stripping techniques, ablation is more effective, has fewer complications, and is associated with much less pain during recovery.
  • Ablation is generally safe and free of complications.
  • This procedure leaves virtually no scars because catheter placement requires very small skin openings, not large incisions.
  • Ablation is less invasive than standard surgery.
  • Most of the veins treated are effectively invisible even by ultrasound 12 months after the procedure.
  • Most patients report symptom relief and can return to normal daily activities immediately, with little or no pain.

The first step in treating varicose veins usually involves some lifestyle changes and compression stockings. You may also need an ultrasound to see if the valves in your veins are functioning normally or if there is any evidence of a blood clot. From there you doctor may recommend further treatment options such as surgery.

Your doctor may recommend this if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • An achy or heavy feeling in your legs
  • Burning, throbbing, muscle cramping and swelling in your lower legs
  • Worsened pain after sitting or standing for a long time
  • Itching around one or more of your veins
  • Skin discoloration around a varicose vein
  • Blood clots

Some people may also choose to have their veins treated in hopes of improving the look of their legs.
